About a week ago on Fox’s “The Big Story with John Gibson,” Gibson talked with Fox News senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano and clinical psychologist Dr. Andrea Macari. The big issue on their minds? Whether or not Lindsay Lohan’s erratic behavior, which includes hospital visits, endless partying, nervous breakdowns, tardiness or absence on movie sets, reprimands for said tardiness and absences, excessive drinking, infamous car crashing, and alleged cocaine use, can be blamed on her parents.
And I have to admit that the question had crossed my mind, too.
Now, sure, with Hollywood comes pressure, and we sit by, sometimes intrigued but always dismayed, and watch too many young starlets go the self-destructive way of Natalie Wood, Judy Garland, Edie Sedgwick, or Marilyn Monroe. And, of course, everyone wants to judge, and pass blame. Which we shouldn’t do. But I did happen to catch the April Harper’s Bazaar interview with Lindsay’s mom, Dina. (Lindsay’s dad, for the record, spent nearly two years in jail for charges including assault and a DWI. His substance abuse and what Lindsay calls his “destructive behavior,” caused her to cut ties with him. Something about a pot and a kettle comes to mind, but I digress.)
So I won’t pass any judgments, but here are some highlights from the interview I thought I’d share:
When asked about her own partying, Dina replied, “"If you can button it and clip it when you're in your 40s, you're going out," before attempting to high-five the reporter.
In public, Dina also admits that she often pretends she’s not Lindsay’s mom, but, rather, her personal assistant. "I don't want them to know I'm her mom," she said. "It's a whole 'nother demographic. People just go dark."
She doesn’t have nice things to say about critics either. "I’m living the American dream, and you can go . . .,” adding that "We’re just so misunderstood.” When asked about the paparazzi, she forcefully and somewhat offensively predicted that if the scrutiny doesn’t stop, “Diana will happen again."
Dina also believes that other starlets, like Paris, are living the American dream as well. "Some of these kids are just lost…They're the American dream. They're the Trumps of the little world, these kids."
As for Lindsay’s excessive drinking, it’s not a problem for Dina. "She is just a 20-year-old who had to reel it in…And she’s from an addictive personality genetically. And in that world, they give you things like candy.”
Finally, on her failure to either discipline or even help Lindsay through her tough times, Dina had this to say. “You can lead a horse to water. You can't make him drink.”
Thanks for clearing that all up, Dina.
