It finally happened: a court has ordered Britney Spears to relinquish custody of her two sons today, placing them into the full-time care of their father, Kevin Federline, until future notice.
We may have all seen it coming, but it’s sad all the same. There’s no question in anyone’s mind (except maybe that YouTube video guy) that Spears’ boys were not being properly cared for under her watch. From allegations of soda in their bottles and toddler teeth-whitening to her much publicized partying and car seat missteps, it’s clear Spears still has a lot to learn.
And yet, although Britney certainly hasn’t been acting like a mother, many wonder if this will be the last straw for the once-thriving starlet who now clearly needs help instead of constant derision. After her divorce, the falling out she had with her family – most notably her mom, and her recent abandonment by former friends, bodyguards, her lawyer, and even her management company, Britney seems to be standing on shaky ground with no one around to help.
This may be an example of what can happen when parents push their kids into stardom – after all, now that Britney has hit rock bottom, her parents seem to be working hard to help secure a successful career for Britney’s younger sister Jamie-Lynn. (Maybe Dina Lohan should take note.) But this is clearly a result of a lot of other problems as well, not the least of which is Britney’s documented alcohol and drug use, which, after being ordered to refrain from any controlled substances 12 hours prior to time spent with her kids, may have led to this latest decision.
Yet the court order stands only for now, which suggests that Britney can turn things around if this proves to be the wake-up call she needed. But in all likelihood she’ll need a lot of help to get there – something she seriously seems to be lacking.
On a positive note, the judge also ordered Britney to undergo parenting counseling – although jointly with Kevin. K-Fed and Britney in the same room? Stay tuned. I have a feeling this isn’t over yet.
