An article in People exalts the new image of Katie Holmes as both strong working woman and adoring, attentive mother. Words like “flair,” “sophisticated,” “confident,” and “inspiration” are bandied about, and her transformation from quiet sidekick to tough feminist icon is applauded – though not really described.
Which is perhaps due to the fact that this “transformation” occurred overnight – and only with the help of some carefully selected photos. I don’t know about you, but to me, that screams “manufactured image.”
Not that I blame her. Or, rather, Tom, who likely has much more of an interest in the assertive Katie Holmes than she does herself. (In theory, of course, not in reality.) With all that Tom has been through in the media, from his outspoken beliefs about Scientology, odd behavior, and disagreements with everyone from Brooke Shields to Paramount Pictures to the country of Germany, the last thing he needs is criticism about how he controls his wife. But that obvious (albeit understandable) motive makes this whole 360-degree image rotation seem much more like PR rehab for Tom than proof that Katie Holmes really is both independent and happy.
We all know not to believe everything we read – or see - and here I have to say I’m having a hard time believing that these recent smiling pictures of Katie in her new Posh-inspired haircut reflect her true personality. After all, it was only a few weeks ago that all pictures of Katie had her looking sullen and camera-shy, dragged along submissively behind Tom.
What’s most interesting to me is that this new Katie Holmes represents everything Scientology is against – style, appearance, exposure, and, ahem, free thought. But is she really free just because she has permission to go to a casting call or two? I think not.
So…will the real Katie Holmes please stand up?
Image: Seriously? OMG! WTF?
